AI-Native Messaging: What It Means, and How to Tell It From a Chat App With AI
Every messaging app has an AI button now. AI-native messaging is something else: an app built with an agent in the foundation. Four tests tell them apart.
Four tests
A chat app with AI features works the same without them. An AI-native messenger doesn't: its inbox is ranked by what needs you, its replies are drafted, its follow-ups happen. Remove the agent and the point of the app goes with it.
1. Take the AI out. Does the product still make sense?
A chat app with AI features works the same without them. An AI-native messenger doesn't: its inbox is ranked by what needs you, its replies are drafted, its follow-ups happen. Remove the agent and the point of the app goes with it.
2. Where do you start your day?
In a chat app, at the newest message. In an AI-native messenger, at a list of what is waiting on you — questions you haven't answered, promises you made, threads going cold.
3. Can a machine use it as well as you can?
AI-native means the plumbing assumes a machine will use it. Kanvo has an MCP server and a REST API, so agents like Claude can read, search and send under permissions a person grants — not scrape a screen.
4. Is there a record of what the AI did?
When an agent sends for you, someone will eventually ask what it was allowed to say, who allowed it, and whether it said it was AI. Kanvo records all three at the moment of sending, in a Proof of Send — the only moment that information exists.
What AI-native costs
An agent can only work in what it can read, so the conversations it works in are not end-to-end encrypted. Kanvo keeps both: ordinary conversations are auditable and the agent works in them; private conversations are end-to-end encrypted with MLS, and the AI is off. You choose when you start one.
What it looks like in practice
Voice notes are transcribed when they arrive, so the agent can read them too.Long threads summarise on request; any message translates.Ask Kanvo runs on the model you choose, including your own, and every answer says which model wrote it.Your WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, Slack and Discord sit in the same…

Most crypto communities chat in apps that don't know what a wallet is. A web3 messenger should: wallet identity, token-gated rooms, payments and airdrops in the chat, real encryption and public proof. Here is the checklist, and Kanvo's answers.
Agentic Messenger vs Chatbot: Who Is the AI Working For?
A chatbot answers your customers from a script. An agentic messenger works for you, across every conversation you have, and answers as you. The difference decides what the AI may do, what it can see, and who is accountable when it gets something wrong.
